Biking in Boston

Our kids love their scooters, but by age 4 or 5 they begin to see the advantages of bikes. We can go much farther on bikes, as they tire less easily. Now my 7-year-old is a very competent rider, and we can bike for transportation throughout the city. But my son is just learning, and we need wide open, paved areas for practice. Without a private driveway, we've sought out great biking areas for kids.

Above is North Point Park in East Cambridge, across from the Museum of Science. Along with beautiful bike paths, this park has four great climbing areas and structures, along with sprinklers for hot days.

We also enjoy biking at Castle Island, part of the Boston Harborwalk. It's a beautiful path with lots of planes overhead, as the airport is very close.

The Esplanade is another favorite of ours.  There are three playgrounds and beautiful water views of the Charles along the way.
