Bringing Books to Life: Chapter 1

Looking for new and clever gift ideas for your children that will benefit your whole family? In the past few years, we've really embraced gift giving that includes an experience. A few years ago, my kid's received new beach towels and tickets to a water park from their grandmother, to go with her that upcoming summer. For months they looked forward to this adventure. Now that they're a little older, activity-based gifts can be especially neat when they're tied to a book. For the month of December, we're highlighting giving opportunities that link to literature: give the book for immediate excitement, add a note explaining the connected experience to come!

Recently, we followed our friend's lead and took our children to a real-life chocolate factory. We were delighted to learn Taza Chocolate in Somerville offers tours! We had just read - and loved - Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when we went for a tour at Taza. This company makes an amazing chocolate with a coarse texture, using a stone ground technique inspired by Mexicans who have perfected drinking chocolate.

The tour is recommended for ages 10+ because it provides a lot of background and history, but my (just) 7-year-old loved it and my 4-year-old listened and enjoyed the many samples along the way. He was hoping for oompa loompas, but here in Boston this is as good as it gets...
